Fernandina is the youngest and most western of the Galapagos Islands and has an active volcano (the last eruption was in 2020). It provides a great habitat for marine iguanas which can be seen in great numbers at Espinosa point. Lava lizards, oystercatchers, and racer snakes were also evident. Skeletons of marine iguanas reminded us of climate change and more frequent El Niños. Charles Darwin visited Fernandina noting ” the Immense deluges of black naked lava…..spread over miles of sea-coast.”
