Dalmatian Pelicans and Northern Greece
Dalmatian pelicans are endangered but efforts of residents in Northern Greece are doing their best to foster a colony in Lake Kerkini. This one small effort is a drop in the bucket against habitat destruction by resort construction that threatens biodiverse areas such as the Vjosa river delta and the Narta lagoon in Albania. An important flyway for migrating birds it is in danger of succumbing to the interests of developers with little benefit to the local population. The Meteora monasteries built on sandstone pillars beginning in the 13th century are astonishing as was the Vikos gorge in Northern Greece.
