San Cristòbal Island, Galápagos

San Cristòbal Island was known as Chatham Island (named after the Earl of Chatham William Pitt) during the time of Charles Darwin. He had no praise for the island remarking “Nothing could be less inviting than the first appearance. ” when he landed on September 17, 1860. Iconic Kicker Rock is adjacent. San Cristòbal Island  is currently the second most populated Island and home to the political capital of the Galápagos Province, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The oldest surviving settlement on the island, El Progreso, was established in 1869.
