While the original English name, South Plaza, is still used the common and official name for the island is Plaza Sur. It is a site for a restoration program for Opuntia cactus plants. Endemic sesuvium edmonstonei ground cover offers a beautifully red and orange colored landscape during the Garüa season (also seen on Chinese Hat island and elsewhere). A rare lava gull pair was spotted along the trail. Swallow-tailed gull chicks and a few land iguanas dining on cactus fruits enlivened the visit.
