Iceland

Remote and mainly uninhabited places

There is something utterly beguiling about the stark landscape of Iceland. Geologically speaking it is a very young island and it continues to house a relatively small population of less than 400,000, who mostly live in the Capital Region of Reykjavik. There are many remote and beautiful parts of the island that I’ve had the pleasure to visit (2007, 2009, 2019, 2023). I returned to the puffin colony in Borgarfjorour Eystri and the south coast where the arctic turns breed in 2023. Nearby the Jokulsarlon ice beach always captivates the imagination. There were places I had never stayed before, so remote that electricity and cell phone coverage did not exist. Taking a helicopter over the Fagradalsfjall volcano at the end of July, 2023 was thrilling and being able to use my drone to capture long extinct volcanos inaccessible on foot provided visuals I would not have seen otherwise. I hope that you have an opportunity to visit Iceland at some point and experience first-hand the breathtaking beauty of this part of the natural world.
