Science and art courses that I teach that are described in this section. They have as a central feature encouragement of active learning using a project-based approach. At the same time it is recognized that building knowledge and developing critical and contextual thinking about a discipline or subject area is not simply a process of determining the sources from which information can be obtained. The courses are structured to provide adequate guidance through challenging subject areas with rubrics, assessments, and individual interactions that provide sufficient feedback on progress and areas of concern. In the studio courses group critiques are central to the learning process. A variety of learning styles are accommodated and the course material is traversed in non-traditional and traditional ways that encourage reflection as well as building knowledge and developing insights.
